Relgion and Psychology

When I first began my research I was looking into the topic of how religion effected psychological treatments of the mentally ill.  Since that topic was obviously far too broad I chose to focus on one religion, which I decided would be Christianity because of its large influence on American culture. From there, I began to read more on how the mentally ill were treated throughout history, and found that gender had a huge influence on treatment methods and patient care.  As I researched more into the causes behind that difference in treatment, I found that historically depression and anxiety have been more commonly attributed  to women, and found a connection between the perception of anxiety and "madness" in women, to how religious beliefs were perceived and implemented based on culture.  With that being said, I made my final decision to write my paper on how religion has influenced the treatment of anxiety and depression in women.

  1. Jenny,

The evolution of your paper is really interesting to take a look at. I think that you have a really strong sense of direction at this point. Are you going to use two categories of resources? Religious history and then women's history resources? What you could potentially do is analyze both categories of resources and compare and contrast the information presented in them. I really look forward to reading your paper when you're completed it.

  2. Jenny,
I really like where your paper is going, I like how you narrowed it down to just women, rather than both genders as a whole because there is a huge difference in the treatment of men and of women, especially since each genders brains are different. I wonder though, if you were going to compare it to the treatment of men? To see how it differs? Because I would be really interested in how the treatment of women differs from men, and how religion creates that difference in treatment. I think religion does play a big role in how women were treated. Overall I think this is an awesome idea!

  3. This is certainly a unique topic. I have a couple comments and questions for you:
1 Are you planning on narrowing your topic down to a specific period of time to be more specific or the effects of Christianity throughout the totality of its existence, in which you will have to be more general?
2 I recommend to do some research on Christian hospitals and nun-run hospitals of the past because there is sure to be loads of information on those.
3 Are you targeting the Christian churches in general or just members of the religion that are in the medical field? There's definitely a difference in what you'll find depending on which.
